Hey Guys!

This might sound like a silly question, but I was wondering if it is possible to send a large item like a TV set to Nepal. It'd be great if I could send one of those black friday deals on HDTVs to my family in Nepal. How feasible is it to take it as a luggage while going to Nepal? Also, if I do so, will I be taxed a hefty amount at the Kathmandu airport?

Check with the airlines to see if they will let you check in a TV as luggage. They have different rules for oversized baggage. Things such as sporting equipment are allowed to be used as a regular baggage and on international flights, you can make it your second baggage and take it for free. However, other things get charged based on their linear size range and weight range. Below is the rule of one airlines,

Oversize Baggage
Oversize baggage rates are based on overall dimensions (length + width + height): $49 for bags with dimensions from 62 to 70 inches and $79 for bags with dimensions from 71 to 80 inches. Baggage over 80 inches in dimension (with the exception of some sporting equipment) will not be accepted.

If you plan to buy a 52" TV, they may reject it because the dimensions will probably exceed 80 inches.

Will you be taxed a hefty amount at Ktm??
Of course, unless you know someone who works at the airport.

Sajhababa: It's entirely possible logistically. But send that TV only if you want Nepal Customs to break your familiy's back... They will jack up the customs on that TV so high that it would not be worth for your family to actually collect it.

not a good idea. remember NTSC and PAL system. yes, US tv is NTSC and only PAL works in nepal. you could buy NTSC to PAL converter but that's another 5000 rupees down the drain..
though you might save some money even if you pay custom at the checkpoint.

goodluck
