If there was no tie at 5th and 9th place, you would not be in that toppers list. Lucky you.

Does any one know what Luna Bhatta is doing? She was from my batch in 2038. This is just out of my curiosity as the toppers were/are given high media attention.

AP98, No one has to necessarily aggree with you that you stated they are hardworking guys/gals. Do you know where these toppers come from in terms of social class? There are many hardworking guys and they fail the test. My friend, this is all about the opportunity. Most of the toppers come from highly priviledged class. Some are even from high class brahmin and they hold high position in bureaucracy!

Hi Sanjnep71 Thank you for providing me information about Luna Bhatta. It was great to know about her. I never kept track of anyone from my class and batch. It just came to my curiosity as discussion started on SLC topper. I was so schocked last month when I read news on kantipuronline of one of my classmates was forced to resign by Maoist as village secretary just outside Kathmandu valley. Secretary job for him was the main source of bread & butter for his family. Going back to AP98's statement - 'hard working guy' - my classmate was also a very hardworking guy but did not have enough opportunity to go for higher education. He never even attempted the college even though he is just from the vicinity of Kathmandu valley.

I am glad that the govt did away with the list of SLC toppers. It was an useless exercise anyway. Most of the toppers came from the usual elite schools based in Kathmandu with tokens from private boarding school outside the valley. It had no purpose except to burnish the resume of the fortunate amongst the most for tunate students, and to let the elite parents from the elite class to differentiate amongsts themselves. In terms of the commendation, I would rank a guy or gal getting > 70% from a village school in Dolkha to a topper from Budhanilkantha, Vanasthali, Galaxy, Little Angeles or any other elite schools in Kathmandu. For the toppers also, it was not a good thing. After brief post-SLC celebrations, there was immense pressure to repeat those academic results - anything short of steller results were considered a failure. I have heard of many toppers having nervous breakdowns in college because they couldn't perform as well. I happen to know few toppers and their records are not much different from those that came in 1st division - 2nd and 3rd divisions is another story. The real story is not what Luna Bhatta is doing now or who Suresh Aacharya is, but the very dismall state of education system in Nepal that 95+ of Nepalese has to endure. Read the following story - http://www.nepalnews.com/archive/2006/others/feature/jul/news_feature08.php

Its a good start but far from complete. With the marking system like ours, people will sooner or later find out who scored the highest marks and would start advertising it in newspapers anyway. I am not saying that advertising what you have got is bad. But we are talking about hundreds of thousands of students whose exam papers are examined by thousands of examiners who may have different marking styles. So, in a way, the toppers may be a lucky few. They must be intelligent and hardworking, which I dont deny , but you need that bit of luck to have your exam papers examined by some liberal examiners to score highest of marks. So what is the point of celebrating the top-10 status when the score is more or less scored by so many others? The best thing to do would be to have a grading system in a band like A+ , A, B+ B etc to make it more fair.

AP98 Bro! I am not saying that I don’t like the term hard working nor I said those 10 SLC toppers are not hard working. What my concern is, you’re applying the term ‘hard working’ only to those who have access to opportunity, which is not because they are being only and truly ‘hard working’ but being sons or daughters from privileged family. So, my bro, keep in mind that there are many hard working people beyond those 10 privileged SLC toppers. I am sorry if you’re one of those 10, but what I urge you to do is go to Thankot or Dhulikhen and look outside the valley, how majority of population of the country are doing or surviving?
