Personally, I think this is a waste of time and a case of misplaced priorities at this time in Nepal.

Besides, no one really "owns" 24 Chaitra.

But hey, so long as people protest against things they don't like and they don't resort to violence and pit-pat/kutai/mukka-mukki and all that, freedom of expression is all that matters.

bme,
your first paragraph is total nonsense. Only if you are afraid of competition... With your logic, there should not be competition in school either. Sometime we get news like, student jumped off the cliff after SLC exam or like that. So, should we scrap SLC exam? Dude, get in to competition else people may label you as coward. So is beauty contest. Get in to it. Most of the criticisms are like "Angoor amilo chha".

I do agree that they could have choosen some GOOD day consultin nepali PATRO or after consultation with vibrant pundits. That way (astrologically) people like yourself would not criticise this event. Who knows.. the effect of astrology??? wink wink...

Mr Kiran77,
You didnt seem to get my point I think. I am against beauty contest, that's my personal matter of liking or disliking and you dont have to subscribe to my opinion. It's sad that you have put the academic world in par with a purely glamor oriented personal adventure that entitles a shot lived fame and disappears afterwards.SLC is a valid and national examination every student must take it. I also did it not
because I want to be the board first or second or 1000th. There is no comparision
between SLC and beauty contest and shouldnt be seen as being of equal in their
respective terms of productivity and creativity. Your analogy of beauty contests having
as much broad, valid, equally standard and 10 years of hard work of a student is as equalof7 days of bikini wearing, bra padding and turning of a natural habit of walking into a feline manner by these girls. Give me a name of one beauty queen, miss world
universe, pokhara, kathmandu dharan any of them who have had a meaningful impact in
the life of an ordinary people,I m sorry I cant name one such deed from the brainy and beutiful women's parade that has been being staged since almost 2 decade..,

MR BME2005,
Your fixation is that you think you are complex, difficult to decode in one go. No one gives a damn about ur personal opinion. It is a matter of concern if you speak in public. And I believe, sajha is public. YES, the analogy of academic is at PAR with glamour and if you have not seen this, it is ur problem. Try and get rid of your fixation first then you will see reasons on everything. So is beauty contest. Beauty is natural gift. Sorry if you are not so much gifted. But hey, let those gifted people express themselves. Who are you to judge whether the happiness/ success they get is short lived? Why worry if it is short lived? Tyra Bank's happiness is not short lived, Naomi Campbell's happiness is probably longer than you can think of, Or take Aishwarya Rai.

As you mentioned that 10 years hard work is not comparable with 7 days of bikini padding, feline walking etc etc. Dude, no one can become beauty queen just because she walks 7 days on the ramp. Just like 7 days of exam needs 10 years of preparation, models / beauty queens also need many more years of hard work. You need eye and brain to appreciate the beauty unless you have ... You are searching equality in analogy, makes me laugh. Search equity on analogy dude...

There are plenty of examples where beauty queens have impactedthe society in positive note. I can hardly think of an average or just above average student can ever raise money for the social need. He/she will struggle for living until he/she dies. (I can not tell for sure if anyone has done so) But if needed, even miss pokhara/Dharan can collect millions of Rupees easily for a charity. How about that? Will that be a big impact?

May be it is time to think about being your self as Mr. Pokhara or Mr. Dharan. How about that? Wink wink...

Kiran77ji,
I appreciate your comments. We are poles apart in our views it seems.I see beauty contest as not as much productive and creative compared to academia for example. You see it the other way.I dont take sajha posts as serious at all and dont regard it a public forum in truest sense that holds a merit and warrants my opinion to be counted as an archive of public discussion. So for me it's just a venue of writing whatever I deem right and provoke discussion and debates, albeit invisible, from people like you who might hold differing views. So it's a personal forum for me and I write whatever I want to. To be fixated in my views is what I am and will always be,you can argue for the merits of beauty contests and I can argue agaisnt it and for something else that I think is right.
How do you measure beauty by the way? what are the standards/formulae? If the beauty lies in the eyes of beholders, then why there be a need of it to show it off? My question rather wanted a little bit of delving into the philosophical discourse of needing a beauty show or not,but you made it of as meritorious as an academic pusuit is.And the utmost important who are these corporate executives who have the right to either qualify or disqualify someone as miss nepal/usa/universe? My question to seek the integrity and the consistency of their judgement. But since you seem to be such an ardent supporter of such shows I do have some questions just because of curiousity.

You said being able to win and participate in beauty contest needs as hard a work as studying is. You didnt write why a beauty queen needs to walk in a feline fashion? is it because the viewers and judges of her movement have some banalistic aura that sparks some deeply enlightening meter that qualifies her as the best cat walk? Or may be the ramification of walk takes them into some sort of Eucladian theory of geometry from where only she is fitted into the right shape and size that fits into the mathematical equation of beauty?

I have not seen a single Miss Nepal cross the corridors of Nepali airlines cabin, let alone them impacting the lives of Nepalese people. By the way Tyra Banks doesnt sound like a Nepali name to me,is it the case?

And a final note: No I dont need to fight for Mr Pokhara and Mr Dharan. My views are clear on these things, rather you might want to consider it for yourself

well i think the reason behind choosing that date is basically to create more media hype..by doing so they will be gaining more publicity......organizing beauty contest is definitely a progressive step however it sucks to see nepal being represented by some of the dumbest girls.

Kiran,

Thank you again for showing some kiran (aka light) to those of us who wallow in our "hypocrisy" and what not.

That said, I do not expect any wah wah for this (I get enough of that at work, seriously!), but the following pretty much sums up my views about beauty contests.

Other than that, my sense is that many young women who show up as contestants are pretty smart, career-savvy and driven to be a success in their chosen fields: the sort of women Nepal can never have enough of.

Bme 2005:

I never tried to imagine the 'beauty contest' for the loser's point of view. You are so right that it could really impact the lives of those girls who lost the contests but will exactly know why? I think being not able to know the criteria could be really bumming.

Again, India is a classical example of long time beauty contest organizer? Have we heard of any of those winners doing anything for the society? of course besides shaking their bum in the bollyhood songs. Look at beauty contest in US for instance, the girl came to stage from the rehab of alcohol addiction or something!!!!

And i think at this point Naomi is doing some social work because she happen to hit her maid with a cell phone.. so much for their social service for the society

I am not into beauty contests but i am not for it either. I really feel the the amount they spend in the contest should be spent for a cause especially in the case of Nepal. I think we should not forget the great women of our country who suffer in every stage of their lives and wish we could do something for them and to build their lives.

Ashu,
Thanks for the link and yes I did reread it. I agree with your assessment and you have done a terrific job analysing the behind the scenes inner workings of such Bazaar.
I do not need to be a Leftist or communist to see beauty contests as the subject of debate and discussion.Nor someone has to be labelled as an agent of capitalist multi nationals. Any topic deserves to be discussed and scrutinised from whatever perspectives one likes to do. We all profess to be balanced on our comprehension of any issues, name it..for the debates themselves are caused by one's willingness and interests to debate. And interest comes from within yourself that already has a foundation laid out on the matrix of perceptions of the issues. For me, I am against beauty contests for the reasons I deem right and just, not the reasons the Left and Multinationals see wrong vs. right.

I don't see any point opposing the upcoming beauty contest. The organizers as well as contestants are interested on it, then what is the problem to others. I understand that any public event in a open society affects the people who are outside the event. And, these types of programs have their own pros and cons, so I think no one can convince the mass that such events are absolutely bad or good for society at large. Lets not waste time protesting such events for the sake of 'protest'.

Instead, I was wondering, why nobody is seeking the role of Civil Society in protest of the 'court corruption' and the 'recent wave of violence if Madesh'.

A thing of beauty is joy for ever.

I read this line about 10 years ago and still I admire it.
We don't go for the thing that is not beautiful. That is why we prefer to buy polished vegetables and waxed Apples rather than black spotted ones or faded ones. There is another saying regarding this, "Eyes beholds the hungry stomach". Even if I am hungry I don't eat the food that don't appeal to me.

Why do magazines prefer to put beautiful ladies in their cover? Becoz people like it and they buy more. Why there are beautiful girls in advertizing? and why not the one with brains?
A sight of beautiful girl puts on smile on my face, isn't that beauty worth? I guess some more smiles be on her way.
If you wanna stop beauty contest, then first stop the advertising and modelling.
When you run after beautiful things for all your life then why do you cry if someone try to find out the better or more beautiful?

Regarding Sangraula, I hate the man when he organized the protest and later refused to take responsibility of the vandalism that followed his protest from the protestetors in Baneshwor. He was the one who led so called Dalits into the Laxminrisimha dham in Nawalparasi at the side of Narayani river and they flagged their symbol in the temple uprooting the flag that represents the hindu temple and later this ended up in brawl and he do not take responsibility but blame on the so called upper cast people. This man only want wah wah that is all, and these things are a garam masala issue for such people.

i think beauty contest would make sense if we had a huge consumer market or beauty products that needs sales. But in case where we rely so much on India or others for everything, we might as well see the beauty of their country.

Even the selection seem useless anyway

Bme,
I am glad you did not mention E8 or E8xE8 or schrodinger's equation , but just stopped on on Euclidean geometry to compare beauty contest with academia. Well, the question about you quatification of beauty is pretty complex or rather is a subjective reference. With your principle everyone is beautiful and can not be compared. So, apparently you are inferring that beauty contests selection is a fools game, ha ha ha.

Dude, the catwalk is a requirement. So why bother about it? Or, do you want to suggest your way of choosing beauty queens? Or you suggest them to solve human genome decoding problem?

I apologize but I fail to understand "I have not seen a single Miss Nepal cross the corridors of Nepali airlines cabin, let alone them impacting the lives of Nepalese people". You mean they are short --- :-)? Helloooo

Ashu,
Thanks for the compliment. I am glad to know that you are gettiing more than enough WAH WAH in your work. That is awesome dude. Thanks for forwarding your article. May be it is clear as crystal to everyone but I found that article a kind of mumbo jumbo. The reason: it failed to capitalize the western proverb in nepali context. It is like drinking diet coke with 1000 caloried Chicken Ciabatta to cut calorie in meal. Yes, there is no doubt, the younger generation is much smarter than before. They can google everything so quick. The beauty queens are the same. KUDOs again for being Ashu (continuous -- jharana) in Sajha since 2000 (reference: your own statement).

Kiran.

Thanks Kiran for your compliments once again.

Well, the fact of the matter is this: So long as there are sober editors willing to print my "googled" articles and so lomg as there are readers willing to spend their time own time reading my garbage and commenting on it, I guess, I am fine, no, with no thanks to
you?

To my knowledge, no one has stopped you from setting up your own little soapbox anywhere you wish. So, why these catty remarks
for no reason here?

That said, your snide and catty remarks remind me of someone I
know about whom I have long wondered when he would grow up (he's
about 30/31 now and considers himself God's gift to Nepal!) and
START appreciating other people's different strengths and taking
joy in other Nepalis' different versions of successes and achievements . . .

But I guess doing that take a big, warm heart and an abundance of
self-confidence -- things of beauty that are, alas, in short
supply, Kiran.

Back to the thread . . . for further conversations, please write to ashu at sajha dot come, please.

In capatilism, there are many products to sell and beauty contest is one of them. . In america it makes little sense becos it is a part of culture like they have prom king and queen contest in early childhood. Same argument can be made about hiphop culture,it's genuine in US. But rest of the world, they just follow eventhough they have no connection to it, but it is cool to do it and they feel progressive by doing it.It is just sad that western countries are loosing interest in beauty contest becos they now know the truth but in full swing in developing countries becos many don't know the truth behind it. I pesonally don't think it is beyond beauty contest.. those scholarship, representation, world hunger eradication quest are mere a mask to coverup the fact that beauty is only skin deep.I rather salut those world nude contest where they are very frank and honest about the nature of contest :-). But hey glamour sells quick. Madness is found only in the masses and masses is needed to sell the product. Mr. Trump 's early intention was to find venue where he could meet those young girls, who knows? but it has become huge deal to those countries where "duee chhaak" is everyday struggle.
