1. One of the objectives of having education, in my mind, is to make us good human beings and citizens who can stand on our own and extend our contribution to others-- for greater good.

2. Educational institutions are not the end in themselves, they are just the means. Some may turn in the long run the heralders of civilization, polity, civic...and others end up with contributing some. All the academic and educational institutions are making their efforts.  It is the history and the time that can judge who has done what.

3. We should not evaluate the institutions only on the basis of what we call the apparent "face values". Means, Harvard's contribution on science, technology, humanity, law and medicine should be weighed against what it does to support the CIA through some of its institutions, such as "school of government" --for instance, or by extending researches on "public diplomacy (??)"  against some countries the "American institution" calls the "rogue states". The point I am trying to make here is: Lets not turn blind in evaluating.

4. Let me turn to the point of discussion in this thread: St Xaviers may be a good institute in Nepal but as far as the "issue of prestige" in society simply because of being a Xavier guy/girl is more a matter of social relation which is based on what our "Maoist comrades" say--a feudal social-economic construction ( I am not a Maoist but I believe Marx in this line of argument). Yes, we are still in feudal state: when it is pretty impossible for the kids of commoners to go to Xavier school or any Bungalow school (you know the vicious circle!). People tend to respect to those who graduate from those 'high class" schools where there is "virtually" no presence of the "real" commoner. But the question here is: should they indeed respect them ["Xavarians" as some people used this phrase]? Do they deserve respect vs others not?

I want to compare this false "respect" of Xavarians with the so called respect a landlord's son used to get during Panchayat time while visiting his village once in a year in Dashain.  He used to be "pulakit" of having been respected by those folks and "felt proud of being a Thulaghare" (just like Xavarians!) He did not know that the respect he got was a shallow and false.

The point I am trying to make is: Xavarians can be proud of being Xavarians just like the landlord' son is proud of being a Thulaghare. But what's the use of that? The "respect" should deserve its worth if there is and it is again the question that needs to be judged in the context of history, contribution for the wider good of the society and mankind and more than that- in the anneal of all these components. Otherwise, the result of such vein iconoclastic narcissism will always have a faulty perspective: of seeing others as "village typo" vs themselves as "civilized".

Aren't the following two similar?

1. Graduates of STX, SMS, BKS, RBS etc are more respected in Nepal than graduates of non-competitive schools.
2. Foreign educated (i.e. US,UK,AUS etc) individuals are more respected than Nepal educated. Not many people in Nepal don't even care which school you went to.

Just like not everyone who applies for US (or AUS, UK etc) student visa gets visa unfortunately not all who apply for those above schools do not get admission. If you have talent and determination to work hard no one can stop you. So everyone, stop respecting any one you see from now on! Lets assume that all Nepalese people went to sarkari school. Peace.

Everyone should be proud of their school. That is why you are who you are today. I am proud that I am a product of elite school of Nepal. I am proud that I am a product of Ivy League. I am proud that I am a employer of one of the top companies. So what. Do good, be good and be competitive.   And finally make your parents proud of you.

"abt we xavierians and banglans not knowing abt the rest of nepal, why the f#ck would i wanna know abt places whhere ive never been?"

This attitude of indifference has pitted us in a political abyss as we know. So lets not say we don't care to know about the rest of Nepal. Lets not make the same mistake that people before us made.

And just making sure, all people who went to St. Xavier's, BNKS or RBS don't have the same opinion. About the respect we get, I can see how that is unfair (as Sarkozy pointed) but it is equally unfair to compare us with "Pulakit/ thulaghare." I know a lot of students who go to BNKS solely on the basis of merit, (almost all for A levels). The same for St. Xavier's College. I dont know how it works for RBS. Some of the posters pointed that "vicious circle" prevents commoners to attend these schools. Well, lets face it: THAT IS NOT TRUE. If you got brain, you can attend these schools. Now again, people might point that I am being superior and what not. No disrespect to anyone. But my point is its free competition and no one is preventing sons of commoners to attend these schools.

Bhaikanchha,
"If you got brain, you can attend these schools"
Yes, you are right but not in absolute  sense. It doesn't work every time! There are so many brains who face numerous circumstances and get deprived of what they would vs. there are mediocres who, due to "favorable circumstances", come up getting more than what they could 'otherwise'. You know what I mean by favorable circumstances: the locus of this whole discussion! Yes, that is-whether you believe or not! One is destined to be s.o. not just by what he inherits but also by what he gets circumstanced!

sarozky, dont worry man....u and i, and thousands of others are on the same boat, frankly speaking i dont even know where these other schools are except budhanilkantha ( name explanatory).

a lot of these people donot know these basic tasks of a village living : bhaisi ko guu soharne, dudh duhune, mahi-ghiu tarne, padhero ma pani lina jane....mill ma dhan kutna jane, falano ko choro muglan pasyo re?....and thousands of other activities that nepalese have been doing for ages. I take pride in that.

F*** U to whoever calls village living and village life shit....Doctor bhaye ni- you sstill like to work at bir hospital and nursing homes.... world bank ma kam gare ni you still wanna be attending conferences world wide/stationed in kathmandu and all that .........UN ma kam gare ni you wanna be getting around on the rovers they give u..and the list goes on...so dont boast where ur graduates have been and what they are doing. There might be a few exceptions who are doing something, but most of these successful assholes can be seen near Durbar Marg and other places like that.

Pisses me off someone actually has the nerves to say i am this , mine is that and shit like that, mero falano le esto garyo, mero dhiskano le esto garyo, mero school ma 3 wota gate, tero school galli bhitra.. padheka kukkur haru!!!!

you might have a harvard degree, mit, a 100 thousand dollar job, an oscar(maybe not), or a nice highschool background like its a piece from pluto, but i tell u what? ........mere paas maa hai! ani mero saath ma mero nepal cha!

sarkozy, in a whole thread all i was trying to prove is in general, people ( there might be some exception) from the these schools, can not stand  heat from the somebody else, and that too from the a poor guy from rural village. they get offended, humiliated and it hurts their so called "ego". and agreeing they have good education, but that does not mean you can not beat their ass off! as i said we are educated from the "context" and that is more powerful.

and jungehawaldar, you are 100% right. I also do not like saying i did this or that, but here i was trying to motivate those who are not from these schools and making them know that  they can beat them. plus it was also important to know what they have in their mind about rest of the Nepal. like you saw in above thread "typical villagers attitude".. many of these jerks think like that..and we need to battered them out as we get the chance so that they will behave them self when they face a common villagers like you and me.

but they do not understand a simple "economic" behind a day to day life of  a villager and  contribution made to our national GDP. they talk about as if they know everything, what a bull you see.... like u said, bhakaro sorne, kudo pakaune, ghas katna jane, bhaisi dune, gothalo jane, bhakra sarne and so on. and most of kids, has to do many of these works before heading to school, unlike them who get bus to/from the school.   this is how we are educated. and yes we should be proud of that as we represent a larger chunk of people and NEPAL than.

in a long run those who evolved out of struggle ultimately prevail. believe in yourself guys!

thanks.

Sarkozy,
I know what you mean. But I think it's not merely a problem of Nepal alone. Not all deserving candidates get the best. Take the US educational system for example. If you are a son or a daughter of a President, or even a senator, you can attend prestigious universities regardless of your caliber. Whereas a better candidate with so-so financial situation might get rejected during the application process. The point is it's not only in Nepal.

And I think you (Sarkozy) are one of the few people here making rational arguments. Cheers for that!!! Whereas some people here are simply expressing their prejudice or anger or frustration or whatever you call it. And they are being too belligerent. If Jungehaldar considers Sarkozy thinks the same way he does, then he might want to reconsider his perception. Sarkozy is a lot more sensible in his approach.

Stop thrashing each other. We all are Nepalese reagardless of where we went to high school and what part of Nepal we are from. When someone asks soemthing about you, you dont go on talking about your high school. Nepal first, rest comes later.

I am flabbergasted to see people's aberrant frustration over St. Xavier's. I tried to appease the discussion and was expecting intransigence from my fellow sajhaities , but people keep knocking on my door again and again.I appreciate everybody's futile effort to enervate Xavierian spirit.

I would like to begin my discussion from my friend Sarkozy's heed about St. Xavier's.

"Yes, we are still in feudal state: when it is pretty impossible for the kids of commoners to go to Xavier school or any Bungalow school (you know the vicious circle!)"

Mr. Sarkozy, you are being dogmatic here.We already elicit the fact from our previous thread that St. Xavier's, St. Mary's are relatively cheaper than other myriad schools in Nepal. In St. Xavier's school if you get admitted in class one, all you need to do is pay monthly fee till grade 12. Unlike other trifling schools, you dont need to pay for admission every year and monthly fee is cheap enough for an average family to afford. St. Xavier's college is cheaper than other untold colleges scattered in Nepal. For I.Sc, the monthly fee is Rs 1700 now. Now, on what pertinent details are you so fervid about impossibility for the kids of commoners to go to Xavier school? Of course, you need to be smart and like our fellow friend kathCAT, you need to have a big brain. Therefore, your statement is fallacious and misleading. So, don't think that people from middle and low class family are impeded from studying in Xavier's.

Sarkozy, you compared Xavierians with "land lord's son" now? I know you are trying to be an ostentatious here to aggregate people's sympathy. I compare you with our dull-witted leaders of Nepal. They talk big in front of mass, but they do different in reality. Let me give you an example here. Dr. Baburam Bhattari, born and raised in Gorkha, went to one Missionary school (like Xavier's) in Gurkha and completed his SLC. During so called people's movement, Maoist occluded many Missionary school. That vivaciously shows off the pungent thinking of Baburam and Maoist. AS you may have noticed that our political leaders(almost all) are against private boarding school and foreign education. They strictly insist that government schools are well and equally facilitated like a private school. To our dismay, all leaders have their son/daughters studying in Lincoln/other eminent schools or some prestigious university in foreign countries..
I may sound vague here, but I will make everything crystal clear in just a minute. Sarkozy, you are no more different than these dolts. Probably, your son/daughter/sister/brother is enrolled in one of these renowned schools, and here you are in sajha trying to prove yourself patriotic and adamant. WTF?

kathCAT,

just like Guru said why don't you send your kids to the village school if you are too certain that people learn much more from the context and surroundings in village. We are yet to see kathCAT sending his children to one of the government schools in remote village for schooling!! kathCAT, it is easy blabbering here about some idiotic sh*t that doesn't make any sense, but when it comes in reality it is totally different.Come up with viable thinking, son!

To make you feel better, let me share you my own experience regarding frustration. After getting done with my high school, I decided to apply in MIT. Its not that I am smart enough to go there, but I wanted to give a shot as I had the application fee waiver letter from my guidance counselor. Obviously, MIT denied my admission. Frustrations started growing over my body. Nowadays, I am after MIT students to judge their intelligence. Just like you, I have a felling that an average US college student can do far better than a MIT graduate. I google MIT coursework everyday to compare with mine, so that I can predict I am in the same level , both academically and intellectually with a MIT student, which is not true! The difference between you and me is that I don't make lame speculations like you. I HATE FANTASIZER.

I KNOW WHERE YOUR FRUSTRATIONS ARE COMING FROM....ITS OK DUDE!!!

Laure! you are again presenting your feeble arguments here. My kids may or may not join SXV, even they do, I will teach them how to respect common man,  One thing you missed, in my entire arguments, i did not say SXV is not the good school, nor local school is better than SXV, you can not compare apple and oranges.  but instead i was trying to tell people that you can be equally good and be better than the products of these school.s Just because someone is from SXV does not make them better( as you are implictly implying) and competent than others. Again do not try to show your SXV attitude here.

Cool down! you create your own oppurtunity no? why you  need to go to MIT! do not feel low and down!
