I see this every where I go but Nepali people are incredibly intolerant. I don't know if it is out of plain ignorance but my generation is completly out of hand. We buy into to stereotypes way too easily, and yes there is always some truth behind stereotypes and we can make some cultural assumptions but damn are we flagrantly racist. Even in the sajha posts I see tons of stuff about Hopsi, Madhise, Musalte. In the Middle east those mofos harrass Nepali ppl like crazy, treat them like dirt, even though they are hard working, and we HATE them for it yet at the same time we treat southerners from our own country in the same way. I've seen ppl spit on the Madhise that comes to collect Khali bottle, Kagaj, though he is doing the work that none of us are willing to do and helping us recycle. I myself have been a part of this, when I was younger I used verbally harrass Madhise, Ironic Becuase I am also from the south, but now because i realize how Nepali ppl are treated abroad I understand also the position of the Madhise, and they are mostly not even foreigners . When the 12 Nepali ppl were killed in Iraq I was sooo angry, these poor hard working ppl were killed for no reason, and I agree the manpower offices should have been burrned to the ground, but why did we attack the mosque, the muslims in nepal never did anything to me, yet we went and attacked thier place of worship. Bichara haru been oppressed by the cast system and find thier only way of escape only to be persecuted more. And of course indian bashing is one of our favorite passtimes, and of course i still do it, I've always thought it was some kind of cultural thing that they are vultures, opportunistic back stabbers, but as I've grown older i've come into contact with more and more Indians on a personal level and they seem to be good ppl, for now tho they r just not good enough of ppl to make me change my mind about them especially becasue they have such an opportunity to help Nepal but they wont becuase well...I guess they r kind of racist too.

I disagree with that notion and ask you to look into other communities before putting ourselves down.

Please visit different ethnic communities if you are in US or else where and have serious 101 conversation with the older generation folks, mind it not the new generation ones as the older generation are the ones who teach values to the newer generation.

I will try to generalize what I have found in US: Every community is proud of themselves of who they are and what they are. Even though they might be open for inter racial relationships their preferred ones are of the same ethnicity.

I do agree with some of the examples you have given. Like you have said you will find that every where, in every part of the world where the locals do not like non-locals especially if they are from a different country. Nepal is no exception.

Education and understanding will lessen the racial friction in societies however it will take a long time, very long time before people start looking past racial differences.

I have also seen how they call names to the recycle material collectors in Nepal but they do that even to the Nepali kids who are trying to earn few bucks. Even though they make racial remarks at times it is a social discrimination for the poor rather than a racial discrimination.

Lack of education and steretyping makes us racist. I still say people from different caste should mingle if not marry. But then again, people like thugged out will have an anxiety attack at the mere thought of that :)

I agree with whoamI, Nepali ppl act like kings when it comes to someone that they think are lower standards and even the foreginers dont curse at someone syaing like for example, an Indian doesnt curse someone saying "gujrati or marathi" right, and a America wouldnt yell "christain, catholic, muslim" or anything but Ive seen Nepalis insulting by syaing "jyapus, maga, dhoti and some even newaris" This is pathetic and thats why they feel like they're being treated differently in North America, but they are actually not, well I have some friends in America, they enjoy their lives and dont think being treated differently and I live in NA too but poeple are very nice. They all are same, it just depends on how you feel. But maybe if you're not educated, you sure will have to work in gas stations and resturaunts because thats what you chose in your life but as far as im concerned, people dont act any different to the labor workers.

If you think that Nepalis are the ONLY ones who discriminate then you are wrong, dead wrong.

I have many Indian friends from different parts of India and they make fun of others or I should say discriminate.

There are lots of racial tension hidden in American communities if you cannot see that either you live in a very big metropolitan area, do not work or work from home or lack understanding of the societies around you. Try to volunteer in public places like the library or local hospitals you will get a feel for the racial tension that lies in your society. Sure they will smile and be civilized with you that does not mean there is no racial tension. Sometimes you have to scratch the surface and look deeper to see whats inside.

Shiv i am totally appaled and astouned by your remarks....i dont think if you even understand what is racism....dont compare what others are doing....look at urself...so what.... nepal is not the only racist society on the world...but that doesnot mean that we have to be same as the rest of the world..... we can be an example to the rest of the world by not being racist.....you know what, i think you would better understand it if you were a colored person so called "madhise" in nepal unable to get a better job even after having a degree...or if you live in the US, you probably live in a place where every white man talks to you when you are walking down the road and they dont give you a strange look when you run into each other....or probably they invite you for dinner just because you are a foreigner........otherwise i fail to see you you dont understand the problem of racism in nepal

nepal is a very racist society.Period.

Can relate to most of the things you said young....it definitely sucks...shit has came down to an extent that Hindu haru "bahun" re ani buddishts haru "Bhote" re, south tira ko "madishe" re ani rest chahi "Pahadiya" in such a small community like ours..kati stereotypes..... sucks i wish we all could live like "Nepali" and only "Nepali".

youngzg,
You did not understand my points. I will repeat again, hopefully it will make sense now.
I am not saying that there is no racism in Nepal, there is. What I am saying is it exists every where in the world including Nepal. And I know it is getting lot better in Nepal.
I do not agree when you guys portray as Nepal as the most racist society, that's where I have a problem, big problem.
Yes discrimination and racism exists every where. Tell me a single place where local people welcome foreigners.
I have limited access to post replies; the quota runs our pretty quick :-(

i thought once you are in America, Nep people will understand that we should stop acting racist (cuz here we're the victims here), but NOW I SEE LIKE GRG ko LOSHAR, SHERPA KO LOSHAR, TAMANG ko LOSHAR, NEWARI ko MA PUJA, FALNA ko DASHAI, FALNA ko CHRISTMAS, FALNA, diskana ko yo ra tyo??? DAMN i'm confused here.
How can I feel the UNITY if you start to divide yo own people coming up with all sorta festivals?

Nepalese are not intolerant...Nepal has 31 or so different languages ...coexisting...they are tolerant.... are they ethnocentric? ...yes they are....

I think most don't travel outside the lines of their ethnic groups to socialize ...however I think things have definitely changed...people are changing

As far as mosque being burned... that centers towards religious differences....

One believes in idols, other doesn't, one believes in re-incarnation, the other doesn't, one believes in one god, other believes in many gods

Extremist from both cause problems....

So the comments that were given by whoamI don't make sense to me.

Good thread...WHOamI...... I applaud u for that. One way or another...we all r part of this racism....and it is about time that we open our own eyes to the prejudices that we inflict upon others before crying out loud how prevalent racism, and nepotism and blah blah blah in the US or elsewhere for that matter.

May i suggest a very good movie : "A day of absence" :.......

Firstly Shiv I never said that we were the MOST racist, I just said that we are racist. and I'll go on to say that we are definately not the LEAST racist. Yes alot of progress has been made in Nepal interms of Jat..Thar etc...but there are some people who will drop money from thier balcony for the sweeping lady becuase they don't want to touch her.
king of cambridge...u don't think burning a mosque was an act of intolerance? I never said we enslaved the Muslims but you don;t need to go that far to be considered intolerant in my mind. They marched down there screaming "Musalte ko dari tan, dari tan" at the time it sounded funny but still struck me as incredibly intolerant. I'm pretty sure those young men who went down there were not having a philosophical dilema with Islam when they went down there, they went thier becuase in thier mind all Muslims are the same...evil and hence share responsibility for the deaths of those 12 hard working Nepali ppl. that is bieng very close minded, bigoted, and intolerant. Religious or racial regardless it is still intolerance. If they were having a true dilema with Islam as u claim why aren't they down thier now debating the merits of thier religion with the ppl who go to the mosque? Great were a country of 31 different languages and we'ved lived together so long together.....and were so tolerant that even after hundreds of yrs of living together we still consider ourselves different types of ppl and some consider themselves to be more rightteous than others because of whom they were born to...just think about that man.....I can't even tell who is exactly what by looking at them yet we discriminate on that basis after "coexisting" for so many yrs

whoami.....

i am so impressed by ur reasons. ISLAM is one of the most misunderstood religions...... and ppl are very biased towards it. Nepalis r ought to be treated like nepalis ..... instead of hindus and muslims and newars and bahuns and so on.

i feel so ashemed taht the slogan was "musalte ko dari taan".... that just reflects mentality of MOST of not nepali ppl (not ALL)...yet... we r definitely RACISTS>..... and not the LEAST.....

Intolerant...yes "extremist".... not me, I did not burn down those mosques...did you ...are you intolerant...or 90% of people of Nepal were not involved...can you read and say those who did the burning were extremist...read my passage again.... extremist are always to blame...

How can you generalize and say all are intolerant...

If you generalzie you can say Nepali people are too tolerant....

Race is our pride/disgrace whatever we want to take it. Pride is much associated with our ego.

No matter how fair we try to be, it does surafe no matter what we do.

I guess its natural.

Why too tolerant

1) Elect Same skum bags as leaders
2) Drink dirty water, even though fresh water is only few miles away
3) Allow Mosque to be built in Kathmandu which were funded by the saudis
4) Live with extended families...
5) Live with so many enthinc groups...
6) Let India push us around...w
7) Give cheaper price for electricity to India even though Electricity is generated in Nepal

we expect too litte, maybe too soft in the head but but Nepali's are tolerant....but extremist are intolerant everywhere...

Extremist are intolerant....
