fresh of the boat,

As long as you talk slowly, people should not have a problem understanding your accent. I have been out of Nepal for half a decade now, and I still do not have American accent. Everywhere I go, if I am talking to a kuire, they ask me where I am from, in fact, they find it attractive and unique. Please do not feel like you have to sound like them when you talk....

:)) Welcome to America :))

Best Wishes,
B.B.

thapap,

malai kuire ley tyesto bhaney, timlai KUIRI ley bhanchhan hola ni. But seriously k, often times, if they tease me regarding the way i pronounce things, I always retort back. Gotta be confident. I just say "yah what- gimme a break, i am not american, and where I come from, this is how we say it"...and they just laugh it off :P

Maybe it is your attitude towards the kuires that get in the way. "These dummies should understand me because I am from Nepal". Why didn't you spend more time perfecting your English before coming here.

hey if you feel intimidated just try to be loud and assertive they will yield. okay bro.

a lot of these native speaker have tendency to think that they are not supposed to understand people with accent even if they are very clear and lucid in their delivery.

My tongue sometimes still slips while pronouncing भिटामिन (vitamin) while talking to my suervisor and rest of the medical community around me. feel so embarrassed when that happens

Neplease accent is not as bad compared to other asians like china, japan, korea etc...or some of those eastern european countries....but i have seen eastern european catch up the the accent faster than nepalease. Some young nepali 18 - 19 who just arrive here tend to catch up faster than the 25s and up. More u talk more u learn. Dont be shy to ask. Ask ur friend a correct way to pronounce words. And ask them to correct u when u say things wrong. Most of the time ur frens will not correct u becuase they are afraid that u may think of them as a mean person. But if u practice enuff, u'll get better.

Who is to say that American accent is the right way to pronounce things? khoi- what makes the world colorful is our differences, and why should we try to imitate americans? I mean, unless u are pronouncing something totally off as to how it should sound, then maybe, but if its something like "herb" pronounced as HERB in the rest of the world versus 'erb' in america - khoi - dhaacha nai badhi k ..anyways..my point is - who is to say American accent is right, and british is wrong? or vice versa? its how we talk, and as long as our message is relayed in the communication - who cares how you say it?

bb darling, that was brilliant. but then they say when in italy, live as romans. so when in america, talk like americans re... aba tyo accent bhanya ta north ra south kai katti farak hunchha...you know what i am sayyyinggggggggg. goddaman northerners hate southerners for the freaking accent, know what i m sayyyinggggggg...

as long as u r understood thats okay, but the freakkikkng accent thing, no matter how loud or clear u try to be, u will be responded with "huh?", "i'm sorry", "excuse me", "pardon me", "come again".....that sucks.

see what i'm saying?

loote

loote,

I see what you are saying DAWG! :P but then, i say the same thing to americans when they pronounce things in a certain way. "huh?" bhanyo bhaney ....' i said....(blah blah) bhanera last ma uniharu ko language n accent ma "duh"" pani add garideu na..haha..but about the accent - i speak with my nepali accent and people think its adorable k...sachhai...and i find it annoying if someone who comes from nepal, and in 6 months, forgets to talk in nepali, but remembers to pronounce words in AMERICAN ACCENT even though the sentence construction might be wrong. For instance: "WHAT YOU ARE DOING" with american accent sounds DUMB k...i'd rather stay what, who and how i am ...but then its only me ....sabbai ko afno afno choice..right?
