first of all u can expect a mean looking indian lady sitting on the arrival(where they check the passport)...for that long transit you should definately visit nearby market place...some indian suggested me to go there when i had a transit there...ask some of those taxi walas(i forgot the name of the market)..they will surely help u if u show them some cash....that indian guy suggested me to bargain a lot too....

First congratulation that u got long hrs in New Delhi! As everyone knows Dotis behave toward to Nepalese u don't have to expect to be called sir at airport instead they call u KANCHHA!
Second if u have a lot of death president, they like to sell tawa ko rotis on the street for $$ so i would suggest u to go straight to Kothi and rescue 14-18 yrs nepali girls who were sold by their own parents or other freaks as many as you can instead of buying Doti ko roti. Good luck!

Yeah, even I had layover for 14 hrs... It was the hardest time I ever had.. I had 4 luggages but they said you have only one.. no speaks to you properly.. I had connecting flight with British air, at midnight British Air personnels came took our passport saying that they need for luggage verification and dis not return for 4-5 hrs.... no one ever wished to talk about our lost passport...not the police non of them...

anyway.. you have to be careful every time you give your any document to anyone.. they might not return your ticket as well....
As some pne already suggested.. better to have indian currency with you.....

GOOD LUCK

Don't worry dude! Everything will be fine. It happens to some people only. I had a transit in Delhi. I dont have any bad experience. I waited for like 4 hrs. I passed my time quite nicely.Dont try to ask for help with any one else, even the police right there. Just go to your airlines counter directly. No NEED TO WORRY AT ALL.

Have a nice trip . Hope you will write about your trip once you come back

Don’t worry if you are traveling thro India! You just have to keep you facts straight. You are a transit passenger and I would strongly suggest: not to get out of the airport (customs) and roam around the city. First, its not safe! Second you are suppose to be in the transit. Officials may tell you that it’s easier to get out through immigration and then come in again from the front gate. DON”T DO THAT coz that’s where they get to take bribe and hassle creeps in…since you are traveling to India in the wake of fake Nepalese passport episode in India….so beware…don’t give your passport to any official ..just tell them that you will come along with them…try to get into transit…you might not be given easy access to it ..security may not allow you in…Hence, go straight to the airline people who carried you till Delhi..and seek help from them to let you pass into transit. Once you reach transit….you can stay and do whatever you like without any problems. There are executive lounges (IRs.500-1000) for transit people who are traveling business class. If you convince them, they will allocate you one of their suites for you to pass your time (sleep). Officials might ask you to verify you luggage before you flight. That’s a norm ….follow it..Hope this helps..have a safe trip

UNICORN,
I WILL KEEP THAT IN MIND BY THE WAY BEFORE GOING TO TRANSIT AREA DONT YOU HAVE TO PICK UP LUGGAGE . ARE LUGGAGE PICK UP AND TRANSIT AREA IN DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE AIRPORT.

If there are so many hassles and possibility of inconvinience, why do people still go through india? Is it very cheap? or faster than other route?
I have taken Cathay Pacific and the route is SanFrancisco, Hongkong, Bangkok, Kathmandu (Thai). It's cool and everything is smooth...chuwak air hostess...excellent service....why the hell people have to take delhi route.......

My experience is from way back in 1997 and thought it was just a one-off incidence. However, reading you all experience, I just do not understand why anybody would fly through India. I have vowed never through fly through India since then and have not been through there since. With the direct flight from Seoul to KTM, it is much better to fly Korean than go through the hassle of flying through India. My uncle flew on Korean last month and was raving about the flight and the hospitality in Korea. They even provided the travellers with long layovers hotel, food vouchers and tour of Seoul. When Korean Airlines is offering all this, why fly through India and get kicked on the ass. Let's just not fly through India, not that it would make any difference to those officials, but at least they can make less in bribes from poor Nepalese.

It cost about $1,700 on Korean. If you add up the cost of round trip ticket from New Delhi to KTM, I don't think you would be saving much though I might be mistaken.

Delhi airport authorities are the stupidest and most uncivilized people on this planet!!

Just last Friday morning, 15th of July, my younger brother, only 19-year old, first time on an internatinal airport, was supposed to board a flight from Delhi airport. He went through the securites and even got the boarding pass and everything, then one Indian authority guy comes and checks his passport. And says that his passport photo doesn't match. The passport was issued a year and half ago, of course he is a growing kid, has changed a bit. Yeah, so they threw him out of the Delhi airport and told him, he is trying to travel on a fake passport and he can not travel from Delhi, has to go back to ktm and fly from there. He hadn't flown from KTM, he had taken train from Gorakhpuur since it was a cheaper option.

He called me and told me everything. Man, I was feeling so bad when he started crying on the phone.

Anyway, he is already back in KTM and will fly from there today to Delhi and take the same airlines that he was supposed to take, of course he paid 15000 nrs more for the rescheduling to the airlines. This way he is gonna be in transit, so they are not gonna check his passport or anything.

Hey sum, don't go out of the transit hall!!! otherwise you are screwed!
Be careful mate, I wish you good luck. They give very hard time to Nepalese passport holders.

Cheers,

Forget Delhi.....................Qatar started or will start very soon to fly to Dulles and Newark/Liberty non-stop from Doha. They'll probably offer some good deals.

I would recommend avoiding the hassles and inconvenience of travelling through Delhi, if possible.

My experience of New Delhi airport (I have been through this airport about a dozen times):
- Transfer system there is manual. Your initial airline is supposed to help you for a transfer. Transit passengers are required to identify their luggages. Once you report to the transfer desk or a temporary desk created by your initial airline someone will call your name and ask to follow him/her to the place where your luggage is stored.
- Once I missed a connecting flight even though I had reached the transfer desk before one and a half hour. The lady at the desk went to get some papers and only showed up after half an hour. By then, the foreward flight declined to take me in saying that it was too late. I had full one hour. They latter rerouted me but I had to wait four hours more there and reached my destination 12 hrs latter than my original schdule.
- Once they ran out of immigration forms. There was no one available to ask for. We (around 50 passengers checking out in Delhi) had to wait about 30 minutes before the forms finally arrived. My driver had to wait outside that 30 minutes extra.
-If you go out, the ckeck in takes at least 5 minutes per person. So if there are 12 persons in the que before you it will take exactly 1 hr before your turns come. The check-in staff there and also in some other airports in India are among the slowest I have ever seen.
-This April I was transiting through there when I saw an Indian officer rejecting to make transfer to two Nepali men because they didn't have immigration stamp from TIA Nepal on their passport. The officer was asking these guys to go back to Nepal again. I didn't know what happened latter.
-Telephone system inside the airport is lousy. Telephne lines in most of the booths will always be out of order.
-If you have INR you can buy some snaks. You can also use dollars but the rate will be in lump sum in that case.
- In my case I prefer to check out, collect my luggage, and check in again to avoid the hassle of transfer. But this option carries the risk of other types of hassles such as saying the passport is fake and so on.

I been living in Delhi for 7 yrs and I know quite a bit. If at all you need to talk to dhotis for any help or anything, refrain from speaking in Hindi, unless u r perfect in the language. Talk to them in English without fawning, try being a little hard but polite in tone, less chances they'll screw around. They get intimidated by anyone whos even remotely gora, speaking in english a case in point here.
