Has anyone taken a direct flight from New York to Delhi? Did you take the Air India or the Continental flight? Positive/negative experiences? I can't decide which one to take.

I took the Air India flight to Delhi from JFK few months ago. Despite the bearable level of 'Desi- attitude' vibe on board, the overall in-flight atmosphere was pleasant. I wouldn't give high rating to the meals served, but as far as the timing accuracy, general in flight service, and the comfort go - I thought the one-grand damage was well worth! Additionally, I found airport staffs pretty friendly (most of them were fairly young -- in the 20s) and cooperative. Duty free shops offer amazingly low priced items. If you are a smoker, or want to get a gift for your smoker friends, make sure to spend  few bucks on cartons of cigarettes at the DF shops.

For the price they offer, I'd recommend flying AI to/from Delhi - especially if you are one of those ppl that prefer a single long flight over multiple layovers!

If you’re paying the same amount or little more take Indian or foreign airlines. I took Continental to London. They were so cheapskate. Dinner was like from Wal-Mart’s’ $1 frozen section. I had to pay $6 for a beer. Old ugly flight attendants give you dirty look if you ask for something.

Then I took Jet air from London to Delhi. It was nice new airplane.  Pretty and hot flight attendants were treating me like a rock star. Food was nice any drinks were available up on requests for free.

It was quite a pleasant journey. Now I have decided that I only get on American airlines if I save bunch of money.

Coming back from Delhi to Chicago, at the immigration in Delhi, a fu*ker Dhoti officer was flipping over my green passport 100 times to figure out whether it’s fake or not. I told that ugly azz hole that I made that in ‘Amrika’ and I am a PR. The stupid azz asked me how did I become PR.

I was running out my patience and ask for his boss then he let me go and said ‘ haive naice joorni’’

Suggestion: Only go thru India if save lot of money and you’re a citizen/PR. Otherwise be prepared for a big hassle.

there's no hassle in delhi. like saajha told above, sometimes there are long layovers and if you don't mind it, then delhi and AI is worth the experience. i came to frankfurt in IA plane and it was quite new compared to cathay (which has great service too) boeing i took in april from US to ktm. the meal was decent i would say...i enjoyed it. delhi airport can be little confusing if you are traveling for first/after a long time as they are going thru lots of changes.

depends on your own attitude how people treat you. people in the delhi airport helped me whenever i asked with a 'please' in the beginning. and that applies to everyone i suppose...i mean, why would you be the nicest person in front of a khaire dhedu but pose as an angryman to an indian?

What kind of hassle? Extortion, bribery? I travelled via Delhi 7 years ago and besides one guy disappearing with my passport for 2 hours (which, it seems, they do to everyone), everything went fine. This time, I have to go via Delhi, so I would like to know what to be ready to face. Thanks in advance. Also, is it a bad idea to go stay at a hotel outside the airport for an overnight layover?

Ha.ha.ha….What r u trying to say? Do you even know the word ‘besides’ means? Is this normal when an immigration personnel disappears for 2 hours with your passport??? This kinda hassle I am talking about. You never know what kinda hassle you will go thru specially coming back to the US from Delhi.

You will never go thru any kinda of situation when coming via Bangkok, Singapore, London, Korea………anywhere in the world.
