Hi,
I worked in IT for a few years in some admin tasks but bored with my current work. Willing to explore a technology for development work that I can learn on my own and has a good market!

What are the IT areas that you have been working, any experiences and sharing of ideas!

Hadoop, most of the components have CL access. So it might be easier for you to pick up quickly. If you want to get more involved, learn python, Scala, NoSQL languages, NodeJS...etc etc

1. You can start with reading the hadoop architecture, I would recommend getting Hadoop - The Definitive Guide - 4th Edition, Hadoop In Practice 2nd Edition.

2. Download QuickStart VM from either from Hortonworks or Cloudera.

3. The authors who published these books have source code in github which you can clone to your VM and practice some mapreduce, create jobs & understand basics of Pig, Hive, HBase, etc.

4. I guess coming from admin background you can setup your own distributed cluster with hadoop and learn about bigtop, vmware, virtualbox, vagrant, etc
