July 1, 2012 By: nirmal

Nepal is very quick in adopting new technology. Nepal's rate of technology adoption ranks very well in the world. Recently it was reported on Google Insights that Nepal ranked #1 in searching for Euro 2012. There are also various events that bring together the growing crowd of social media enthusiasts. On June 30th, Social Media Day 2012 was observed at Kamladi, Kathmandu where bloggers and social media enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the day.

The most visited website in Nepal is Google followed by Facebook at #2, and Twitter ranks #11 (Alexa.com). There was a well-written piece on eKantipur titled Sweet tweet that talked about Twitter's advantages over Facebook especially in Nepal's context. Although majority of people in Nepal use Facebook on an everyday basis (almost religiously), there are very few Twitter users. Roshan Joshi who works as an Internet Marketing Consultant in Nepal believes that there are over 12K Twitter users in Nepal but active users are much less.

Even though Nepali brands do not have much Twitter followers, individuals have amassed a large number of followers. Ncell, one of the leading mobile communications service providers has only 502 Twitter followers but has 253,007 Facebook fans. Nepal Telecom, another leading mobile communications service provider has 2,242 Twitter followers and has 5,958 Facebook fans.

Although we know that there are far less Twitter users than Facebook users in Nepal, the small amount of users on Twitter are very active. If you are on Twitter, you probably already know who the most influential Nepali people are in this social media platform. Here are some of the active Twitter users with a lot of followers as of July 1, 2012:

Prabal Gurung @prabalgurung - 59,316 followers
Leplan @leplan - 56,946 followers
Kanta Sharma @kanta_sharma - 52,111 followers
Meera KC @meera_kc - 37,231 followers
Promise Tamang Phan @TamangPhan - 26,327 followers

Credit also goes out to Bikalpa for starting a list of popular Nepali Twitter users.

Are you on Twitter? Who do you follow?
