Well when survival is at stake then we need to think surviving first, then you can think of who can rule. Right now we need to get rid of Maoists and Girija and only king can do that. Once that part is stabilized, we can look for more options.

Add to this thread`s, to makes matters worst as as insignia stuff for public criticism of the king and the army linked here my favourate cartoonist from Nepal: http://www.rajeshkc.com/ .."Our role has become much more important now and we owe it to our readers to get the messages to them," said KC..

.....no reason for not to be pride being a Nepali and abode to royal kingdom even though  roaming all around the planet for the sake of better future which was not possible for Nepalese . It is not abnormal for the ordinary nepalese citizen to be deprived from the equal opportunities since the country itself is suffering from the mafia’s leadership from past to present. They (the certain individuals who are close to the power) are holding the entire cake, they eat it first, share it within their families and the rest, they sell it in cash for their own benefit. The Rana and shah’s ruling families twisted our destiny for a long time, and now for some year, the very corrupted politicians and the bureaucrates are shuckking the blood of the poorests of the poor ...जननी जन्मभुमिस्छ स्वर्गदपी गरियसी

Every age has experimented with several types of political systems. While it has been argued that certain systems are more conducive to different times, we have to see that no absolute answer has been forthcoming. If one particular system of political economy was perfect then there would be no clash between ideologies and systems of political thought. What we need is a more nuanced understanding of historical processes. It is quiet facile to simply go back to history, pick up one ruler, and represent him as an evil villain from movies as done by Dr. Ramesh Khatry in his article Monarchy and myths (The Kathmandu Post, 21 Dec, 2007). On the other hand, simply considering kings as the harbingers of prosperity and stability are problematic, as Kamal Thapa has attempted to do so in his article Monarchy: Reality versus myth in the same newspaper(25 Dec 2007).

The use of historical figures for simply putting across points of ideology is specious. For scholars and thinker like Dr. Khatry, it is not becoming to use such superficial tactics. He could easily put across his points much more strongly by locating his argument in the present context. If historical figures must be used then there has to be a more well rounded understanding of the examples themselves. In the past, the Raja was more a symbolic figure around which, the idea of socio-political framework was constructed in form of a dhunga (stone). Within this dhunga there were desas (countries) mostly villages, and again there were some Rajas of political formations who had accepted the subordinate status under the Shah Raja of Nepal- the Kathmandu valley, which was the centre of the dhunga. Scholars have constructed the image of Prithvinarayan Shah as all-powerful king, and his role in unifying Nepal has been exaggerated. What is to be borne is that more than half of the area comprising modern Nepal was conquered after the death of Prithvinarayan Shah. Few persons wielded power at the centre mostly with the help of sword, and there were local leaders and persons in different regions who had political, socio-religious and economic power. If the Rajas were dictators, and were simply rapists and keen to sell the country for paltry sums as Dr Khatry seems to indicate, the people would surely have risen decades ago, moreover it also means that Nepal’s neighbours were extremely stupid to have let go of such brilliant opportunities to take over Nepal, repeatedly.

Kamala Thapa endeavors to show the importance of monarchy for Nepal; however, his views are shaped by his location vis-à-vis the monarchy. It has to be strongly pointed out that stability is not in itself the final goal. Stability can also be a by-product of suppression. The strikes, and the community movements such as Janajati, Madhesi and Dalit, etc, do not necessarily hark back to the age of Rajas but rather expose the deafening silence of poverty, oppression, underdevelopment, and hunger of the masses, for which the few powerful persons belonging to certain families have been mainly responsible.

The language of the present political debate has a few holy motifs such as democracy, secularism and the like. Certainly, these primarily western ideas cannot simply be imported into Nepal without problems. Equality before the law does not necessarily translate into equality of opportunity. Meanwhile the King of England is not Catholic, as Kamal Thapa considers him to be, that was the whole point of the reformation. The King of England broke away from Rome and set up an independent Church called the Church of England, because he wanted to get married a second time - not for politics but for love. The Monarchy in England has a long history and its powers are now well defined based on conventions and an unwritten constitution. Such a tradition of restraint cannot be invented in a day, it was with this realization that India chose to establish a republic. While we debate on these pressing questions we have to remain aware of the Nepali context and the history of Nepal’s political system, with its coups, bloodshed and other problems.

Another significant point has been of culture and religion. To understand the King as the lynchpin of both religion and culture is extremely problematic. Many countries do not have kings but they are of a strong religious orientation especially Islamic countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh. The US is religious to some extend but it is a republic. Many European countries have preserved their culture without the need for monarchies, Germany and France being significant. Societies and cultures need to adapt with time and changing contexts, we have to accept not only new ideas but also newer influences on society. Nepal has to construct an identity, which will negotiate between tradition and modernity - this the people will do themselves and no amount of restraint or pedagogy is going to alter it. Societies have interesting ways to negotiate with circumstances; simply trying to cling to the past or obliterate it completely can only lead to oppression of the people. It is perhaps too overbearing of intellectuals to imagine that they can think for the larger society, people make decisions based not on ideology but their particular contexts.

The present political circumstances of Nepal are not necessarily an indicator of perfect democratic rule of the people. Nepalis are surely on the throes of a transition. The form of which is uncertain- contingent on many social, economic, political and global factors. In this context, they need their intellectuals, scholars, students, and the public at large to think creatively rather than simply counterpose (supposedly) diametrically opposed political systems. The people of Nepal need to draw the best elements that are present in Nepali society; however, in the name of change, they do not want a dictatorship of any kind. An eminent Nepali historian, M. C. Regmi once wrote with a hope that Nepal would ‘learn from the history of Gorkhali Empire and shape its future in the interests of the people themselves, rather than in the interests of its kings and political leaders.’

You have very balanced thoughts Neell. While opposing the extremist views, I also abhor those thoughts which are resistant to changes. I don't believe politics is lines drawn on the stone and we follow them. Changes are always unpredictable but prudence is to take steps to mitigate risks. If we turn our back to the changes, we have no rights to expect anything better than what we have now.

Neell I thought that was a good article (very much newspaper quality), but at the same time it had deep denotative (dictionary)  meaning and  no connotative (to the context) impact. We are talking about identity crisis. You are talking about good and bad. Everything that you said seems to be true, but if we are alive or at least if we are ready to change our passports as Indians or Chinese.

MN Nepali, as you have read my article, I think you notice this: 'Nepal has to construct an identity, which will negotiate between tradition and modernity - this the people will do themselves and no amount of restraint or pedagogy is going to alter it. Societies have interesting ways to negotiate with circumstances; simply trying to cling to the past or obliterate it completely can only lead to oppression of the people. It is perhaps too overbearing of intellectuals to imagine that they can think for the larger society, people make decisions based not on ideology but their particular contexts.'

I think you should not jump into the conclusion that Nepal would be captured by India, or China, if monarchy is abolished. Here you are disregarding the role of the people of Nepal in your narratives, giving space only to politicians and King as if it is only in their hands to decide the future of Nepal. The people will act according to their contexts; if they feel monarchy is required for saving Nepal's independence, the political leaders will not be able to abolish monarchy. But if the people feel that they do not need the king, no body can save monarchy in Nepal. One or two persons like you and me, cannot pass judgements on matters concerning the country, and its problems. We can only explore the possibilities, and frame our narratives based on them.

Pressure from "Raw" of India. Girija PM had asked Nepal Patrika to change the wording:

Will anyone accept this correction? A fact when it goes to public, damage is already done. You can hardly correct. Positive to negative is OK, but negative to positive is impossible. RAW's influence continues to exist in Nepal.

Dear GP,

Let me tell you about nepalnews reporting Shanti Sigh's death that day of the royal massacre. I know about it and it was reported by a senior reporter of Nepalnews that Shanti Sigh died. That senior journalist who heard it from was Mr. Bhola and I know him personally. He said he heard the wrong thing and put up the news in a hurry. It was actually a incomplete story.

One more thing I would like to correct is that Shanti Singh does have children... two sons Binod Singh and Promod Singh and a daughter named Chhaya Rana. So nobody else would even think of taking her property with I don't think is that much.

What are the chances for of Outside Nepali getting through Red Tapes of Nepali Politics ? ha ha ha You are contradicting yourself. So you agree your Lalmohan and Rasbhari has not worked. That is why you need to get rid of all those old hags. And start afresh. NOT FORCE FEED SAME OLD LALMOHAN AND RASBHARI ? Then we will be stuck in this cycle forever stunting Nepal's growth and developement.

Saroj," Do you think I wouldn't want for young educated blood to get into politics and make things better?" There you go my fren, so you agree too.

AND REALITY IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. Unless you want that same old same old accept what is in front of you then ...we will be stuck here froever. That is why I am advocating CHANGE.

advocating change is what we all want .............nontheless starting from where is the question ??? who has the courage to oppose the maoists who are armed and could get away easily killing all your family and supporters...........who has the courage to stand against the political leaders who has the command of the armed forces of Nepal..........Regular people like us who has family ties back home dare not go against the two powers of nepal...hence pick on the King who has basically no power at all and is lying low with no power.....But both the political leaders and the maoist still fear the King......NOT ANY ONEOF US...they dont respect the people neither fear them so they do as they wish.......decide nepalese people faith and blind eye on all the curroption and Indian intrusion into nepals politics and her boundries......THEY all fear the king ......They know that The King still has his supporters all around waiting for his next moove .......they have changed their alliances because of fear and intimidition and the welfare of their loved ones...........showing true solidarity in Nepal openly towards the king is to invite trouble and death. so people have changed sides.....survival and smart move to exist and keep family safe......................Almost all the people abroad knows that these political parties and the maoist are bad but cant voice their opinion as effectively as we would like because these ruling parties of nepal doesnt give a rats ass about that.......they can easily kidnap, extort and blackmail families and friends of any organizations formed outside Nepal against them ....SO WHERE DO WE START.......................before we get eaten by the giants around us...and we lose our identy and becoame a minor group of people fighting ethnic battles among eachother..........wehave lost the UNITY of being Nepalese that was formed By Prithivinarayan shah and looking at Nepal right now .....it is heading to what I call is a Pre Prithivi Narayan Shah era...where we were not all nepalese but just ethnic groups which could have been easily taken over by the British Indians ......the UNITY of all these groups and the Identy of Nepal saved us and our country.......NOW we are in a crossroads where the same scenario is starting to show up..........BROKEN WE FALL UNITED WE STAND STRONG.............In my veiw who can GLUE back our Identity as nepalese ( pahades, madhiseys, tharu, Newars etc).....the GLUE is The KING. even just ceremonial. He represents the UNITY of our Nepalese People...and NEPAL as a country.

Based on the views expressed, some people seem really dreaming India to take over Nepal so that they would be able to say loudly and proudly one day, " See as we had told that India would take over Nepal and we would be a part of India, we are now." Otherwise parroting a single word again and again and again without any justification makes no sense. Your dream would never come true guys! Keep on day dreaming.

People's voices were put under the foot and always supressed in the pretext of blind nationalism during Panchayat regime. In the eyes of royalists, political parties and people who came to the street against the cruel regime were "Bideshika bui chadeka bwasaharu". During Jana Andolan I, we were in schools and taken to rallies, organized by Mandels, in support of Panchayat regime and the King. We dint know anything about nationalism and politics. We chanted songs in support of King and slogans againt the political parties and Jana Andolan. Later we went to college to pursue higher studies and gradually realized that we were abused by Mandales. In fact before we came to the college, we used to think that King is the greatest and mightiest creature in the world and anybody who is against the king is senseless and anti-nationalist.

In the same way, I find some frens plagued by similar kind of naive mind. Come out of narrow mind of blind nationalism. Nothing would happen in the absense of king. King is just the scarecrow (hau guji)  and believe on yourselves. You are now in America (or any other countries) having higher education. As rightly pointed out by Neell, people are there on top of all.  Where is the place of people in your unity and nationalism? Or do you still think people are bheda/bakhra and raities?

i think it's better that Nepal should be split into different regions if the upcoming elections fails.

this way it's good for everyone. or else they would be bloodshed everywhere.

There is nothing to discuss.
Bottom line:
King is good.
Maoists are terrorists.
We need to assassinate prachanda and babua bhaiya to free millions of Nepalis from communist ideology, which is a piece of crap and in the 21st century only psychopaths like Babua bhaiya and Prachanda have it. Didn't you all see the double standard from the Maoists in MySansar? First, they set tires on fire in Kathmandu then they broadcast it in their channel mySansar as if they had nothing to do with it and are troubled by it.
Fugging Jokers and we are more stupid then they think.
