After reading all the comments posted, I am really saddened by some of you guys with your perception and illogical thinkings about the Lahures aka Gurkas.

The Lahure term is named after Lahore, a city in Pakistan. After the peace treaty was signed between Nepal and the mighty British Empire after the bloody war, one of the many proposal set by the British government was the recruiting of Nepalese jawan (between the age of 18--21), to strengthen its army. The British Officers had been impressed by the courage, discipline and the fighting prowess shown by our forefathers in protecting the sovereignty of our motherland against the British Empire.

This proposal set by them was actually win-win situation for Nepal; for every jawan the British recruit into its army, the Ranas and its government was paid some amount of due for the jawan service in the British Army. Therefore it can be concluded that Ranas and its government though receiving due from the British Empire, used only for their interest and not the nation.

We also need to realize that the Ranas and its government of yesterday were running the country in the system known as "Panchayat".

I believed that many of you reading this forum know better than me how the Nepal was run in this system. But to my best creditability, I found out that janajatis (indigenous) people of Nepal was not allowed to study, not allowed to go to school.

We also need to realize that janajatis or indigenous people of Nepal are Mongoloid origin. Therefore in doing so, the Ranas created huge education disparency between the Mongoloid origin and the person of Brahmin family.

Therefore the notion that some of you has been creating that Mongoloid are lazy and less able in the education are totally baseless and uncalled for. The history of Nepal should be rewritten because there are many things which has omitted, especially the system of Panchayat and the Rana's oppression against its people and the nation. Though how shameful and demeaning the history would be, it is still part of Nepal's history. Without it, the history of Nepal is not complete.

We also must realize it was the Ranas Government that signed the Tri-Partiate Agreement.

The Tri-Partiate Agreement was between British Empire, India and Nepal on recruiting of Nepal's jawan into its army.

No doubt the British Government laid down the terms; it was the Ranas government who signed the pact. Therefore the discriminatory on the issues of pay, pension and benefits of the Lahure, (Gurkhas) can be attributed to the Ranas government too.

Therefore analytically the Ranas and the Nepali government had no interest in helping the Lahures; but on the other hand the former were more than happy to receive the due in the form of monetary funds from the British Government for every jawans the British recruits.

In those days, Nepalese jawans went to Lahore to be recruited and for the training before they were assigned to their particular regiments and deployed around the world for the British Empire cause. Hence when these jawans return home on their leave, people called them Lahure and still do. The British officers had been right when they first wanted to enlist our jawans especially from the Gurungs and Magars communities. Later they started enlisting Rai and Limbu jawans from east Nepal too because British Empire was so large that it needed a huge reliable army to defend the Crown interest and territories.

Under the name Gurkha, which the British derived it from Gorkha, a town near Pokhara, the Gurkha Bridgade was formed. By the end of WWI there were total of 10 Gurkha Regiments. Indians army still used the title GORKHA to distinguish Indians from Nepalese. The word Gurkha became famous over a period of time when our forefathers displayed great courage, bravery and ferocity on the battlefields across the far flung of the world. The lahures community mainly made up of Gurungs, Limbus, Magars and Rais, (GLMR) known as Gurkhas quickly soon gave the world that there is a country call NEPAL.

Not only had they showed courage and bravery but the Gurkhas showed complete loyalty to the crown, a loyalty that cannot be describe in words but shown in DEEDS.

Off the battlefield, these same men were simple but showed great devotion and pride into soldiering. The men were truthful, honest and above all showed great passion and devotion into their army life.

In short, the British Officers describe Gurkhas as the perfect soldiers.

The term Gurkha quickly become anonymous throughout the world mainly thanks to the lahures associated with Gurung, Limbu, Magar and Rai community.

It is because due to the same attributes that the present days lahures has shown as our forefathers, that HM Queen still employed Gurkhas into the British Army. In addition

the Government of Singapore and Sultan of Brunei still keep portion of Gurkha because of the highest form of honesty shown by GLMR. In Singapore, the Gurkhas are trusted more than its own people hence the lahures guard key installations in and around the island, from gold reserve to money printing house and even the President and senior ministers residents.

This is just one of many duties performed by Singapore lahures. In Brunei too, the Gurkhas safeguard the Sultan oilfields and also defends Brunei against its aggressors.

The hardwork, highest devotion and pride to soldering and honesty demonstrated by GLMR is the very attributes that even after the great war of yesterday that these 4 communities are still sought after by government from Brunei, Singapore and UK.

One of you has created the word “Lahureism”. And it is true that lahureism is another form of professional job. In fact it is more prestige if you become a lahure now than ever because it is one of the toughest regiment in the world and the vacancy is far and few while the number of applicants remains the same as before. In short the chances of being selected are 1: 200 for the

mere post of about 300 per year. Even number of DV allocated to Nepal is 4 times higher.

It becomes more prestige if your father and your grandfather and your uncles and great uncles had served the crown before. Only the lahures community can feel and understand this.

Therefore most of you just make bigotry remarks about lahures and their families.

Before starting to bash lahures again, you need to think and do some researching.

You need to research the history of lahures and ask yourselves;

  1. Why did GLMR communities joined the foreign army in the first place?
  2. Why do they still do it?
  3. What are the contributions made by them to Nepal and still doing?

Some of you have written that many of our forefathers fought and died for cause they really did not know.

Well those who think this way, you are literally quite correct. But in those times the indigenous people of Nepal main cause was “How can I progress my family”? “How can I give better life to my family”? “How can I give education to my children who I am deprived of”? Most of you are born and educated in Nepal and therefore have better understanding of Nepal’s history yet you just closed you eyes or pretend that you do not know…….!!!

Well both causes came out well to lahures community in the end. Our forefathers fought for cause that was right and good.

Secondly while fighting for the good cause of humankind, our first cause was answered. The lahures community progress and their children have not only access to the education; they have access in the first world class environment!

Secondly when I went to Nepal for the first time in 1997, many parts of Katmandu was still a paddy field. 10 years later these same paddy fields are gone. On top of these fields are homes and houses of ex. Laures. Many are living better and well to do life than many other average Nepalese. Therefore just because some lahure kho chora and chori did not do well in school, you go on to criticize and generalize all the lahures from the comfort of your seat, in front of monitor.

This sumedhu turn the whole topic from gorkhali bravary from 18 centuary to laureism yet failed to good logic why he is right? He possess ideas like leaders that is only limited to speech but not grasping the whole situation of nepal in context. Yes it is not good to fight for another country but your whole argument neither negetes the war fought by gorkhali in the history nor it serves any positive by trashing the acheived  history which cannot changed rather shows his utter ego, jealously and negetivism self proclaiming himself as knowledgable guru. Yes little knowledge is dangerous but too much knowledge is spiilable. He has yet to prove what he has done for country lately ( as he claims) . hopefully it will be bigger than Amarsingh. Bhakti Thapa, Balbhadra and Tul Bhadur Pun. Here are some of his main   ridiculously sounded arguments.

1. People in those defeated countries hate gorkhali ---  wow what a surprise and coincidence ? yet you    think that is serious haina?

2. British use gorkhali as Psychological weapon ---- so? in war any thing is possible. How that is bad?

3. British pay peanuts as compare to counterparts ---- Yeah it's peanut but still comfortable isn't it? Country which is solely based on remittance I hope your idealistic view holds a solution. But guff and implentation are two different thing isn't it?

4. We lost so we must be lousy not bir ---- think what is saved not what is lost. The war which ended up with peace from both sides tells a lot. Only negetism brings a restless soul.

I donot dwell on  past history but surely would not like to see somebody trashing some true acheivements with pinhead brain. Now your sole topic is shifted to Lahureism , here is news few months ago how people who fought for another country are helping current nepalis indirectly. But overlly idealistic , negetive attitude is in your blood so you only have complain in your life but not the solutions.

I agree with the circumstances that lead lahures become a lahure. Its the same circumstances that anyone would leave the country  to seek any form of foreign employment.

I also agree that Lahureism is one of the key source of remittance to Nepal. Dont know the exact percentile but i'm sure its significant. Good news that 300k more Nepalese will be hired in Malaysia. But why are we singing songs about this issue. Arent we missing something here. We sing about foreign employment that started with an abuse and is still on abuse.

I dont hear indians singing songs about how well they have supported IT industry in US. I dont hear songs about how well chinese folks run their buffet place.

Sidster, don't mean to offend you but there's a song for almost everything. People sing when they are happy, when they are sad, when they go  to a marriage or a funeral, on a party or a birthday, and when they go to war....Sorry I don't know about you.

MAKURAMANCHE SOLTEE THANXs FOR UPLOADING ALL THOSE VIDEOS HOI.  SOMETIMES I WONDER WHERE YOU GET ALL THESE GOOD STUFFS FROM.......?

THESE KIND OF VIDEO ALWAYS BRING ME MEMORIES OF MY DAYS GROWING UP IN THE CAMP! FROM THE DISTINGUISH SOUND OF PIPES AND DRUMS TO THE SHEER VOCAL PITCH OF NCO MAMA GIVING ORDERS TO THE RECRUITS. FROM THE SIGHT OF MAMAs MARCHPASSING SO SMARTLY ON THE PARADE FIELD TO THE SMELL OF MAMAs AFTER THEIR HARD INTENSIVE TRAINING.

NO MATTER WHERE I GO, WHAT I DO, THESE THINGS WILL ALWAYS BE PART OF ME.

LIKEWISE TO ALL OTHER BANJAs AND BANJIs, HOPE YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR FOREFATHERs AND FATHERs DEEDs.

FOR WITHOUT THEIR CAUSE AND SACRIFICE WE WOULDN’T BE WHERE WE ARE NOW.

FOR THOSE WHO HATE US, WE STILL LOVE YOU ANWAY.

ANYWAY AFTER READING SUMEDHA VIEWPOINT WHICH I FAIL TO DO EARLIER, THERE ARE TWO VIEWS HE MADE THAT IS RELEVANT TO LAHURE COMMUNITY.

1.      THE SO CALL CYCLE OF “LAHUREISM”

After all who wouldn’t want to follow up his father’s footstep which he himself has taken from his father and him from his father and him from his father.

Because it’s a honor and prestige to follow the tradition, the cycle of “lahureism” will not go away that easily from the lahure community.

Two factors are to be blame for the cycle of “lahureism”

·        Opportunity----Because it is there.

As long as UK and other country continue to seek Gurkhas service, it will never die out.

·        Socio-Economic condition back home

Till the condition of Nepal improves drastically and jobs are available without discrimination, Nepalese will continue seeking foreign employment.

2.   EDUCATION

Sumedhu has criticize the lahure community because of our failure (banjas and banjis) base on the education comparison with the common Nepalese folks. His assumption is that we are narrow minded----banjas becoming another lahure, banjis lahureni, others returning to HK.

He is literally correct to say that and we cannot blame him since every person is entitle to own opinions.  Sumedhu is totally correct if this was implied to the first generation banjas/jis.

The second generation banjas/jis continue the lahure tradition and culture. More importantly many utilize the ID and return to HK.

But lately, Sumedhu needs to know that the third generation banjas/jis are more educated than our predecessors. The third generations have gain better access to the education and many are more scholarly than before. Though the lahure tradition and culture still continues, it is not as much as before. Sumedhu presently there are many banjas/jis studying in the institute for higher eduation in many foreign colleges/universities. Many of them have graduated with engineering and other highly sort degrees.

Though banjas/jis have not make any impact in Nepal’s society or elsewhere, there is progress going on. We have to realize that the janajatis/indigenous people of Nepal were far behind not only in socia-economic status but in education level as well when compared to Newars and Brahmin community when our forefathers started enlisting for the British.

Therfore given time, maybe 5-10 years, depending on the stability of Nepal, I believe that banjas/jis will soon be making contributions to Nepal’s society with Western idea in Asian values for that's how we have been brought up.

Makuramanche,

I hope i typed your name correct. Can you please enlightened me with the name of couple countries who actually sing a national song about fighting for another country?

Someone mentioned Lahures fighting for good cause and good reason...if Nazis or Stallin had gotton hold of those loyal, honest, and needy hill people who could be abused for their cause, today i bet these people would have been fighting for Nazis or Stalin. Get the point !!!!

I dont hate lahure for being a lahure. I dont hate Bir Gorkhalis who fought FOR Nepal in the past. Bir Gorkhalis who helped unite Nepal. Its sad that we dont realize that Lahureism was exploitation started by the powerfuls to us the powerless but we take a pride in it. A pride that is not only limited to a family pride but a pride that is hoped for a National pride.

It will be hard to advocate lahureism as a national pride because most eyes have been opened on how it started and what its purpose was. Do any of you know that British hired Lahures to supress freedom fight of india. Indians saw how fierce/brutal Nepalese fighters were and they wanted a Regiment for their own so that these hill people can be used again if suppression is needed again.

It was really hard for me to accept the reality too, specially after coming from a lahure family where the trend was set by my great grand father. Still, i refuse to sing a National song about it because i don't want to be recognized as hired fighters. Hired fighters who will fight for employment. A hired fighter who loves his family, his culture, will be loyal/honest, and will do anything for his master.

Well i guess i can look at the good side at least Nepalis are fighting for India, UK, Singapore and such. Good for Nepal and us that Saddam Hussain did not make any good offer to Nepali Fighters otherwise we would have been calling fighting for Saddam a National Pride as well. Then that would have been a bigger embarrassment than what we have now.

BECOMING A LAHURE IS NOT AN EMBARRASSMENT BUT CALLING IT A NATIONAL PRIDE IS ONE

Sidster, that was such a meaningless statement I've ever seen. Your hypothesis started and concluded in a bunch of would have, should have, could have immature lines. I doubt, your life is still stuck in one of those cliches you have, get a grip dude. I understand the fact that lahures were hired soldiers, nobody would have been proud if they had worked for Nazis or Saddam Hussein. The ones that are getting recruited now automatically becomes a citizen, so that's their county too. Every country has her own right to defend her interests and if Gurkhas are considered to be a part of that huge responsibilities, that's a pride in itself given there's a right cause to it. These people maybe fierce in battles but go and talk to them, they are not heartless souls, they have the conscience of differentiating what is right or wrong. They never worked for such evil forces and they never will.
"BECOMING A LAHURE IS NOT AN EMBARRASSMENT BUT CALLING IT A NATIONAL PRIDE IS ONE."
What is a national pride then?
Being an IT guy, scientist or a doctor in U.S, is that a national pride? Boils down to the same point, working for their masters. Yes, it always will be a national pride for winning so much genuine respect and honour, being so much honest and loyal that's rare to find, being admired and feared from enemies, being recognized for their hardwork and sacrifices and being praised from highly respected people around the world. Might be embarassing for you, but I won't be embarrased no matter what you do out there but certainly won't call you a national pride, unless you have the reason enough to make us proud...

Grungemaster,

Now you are being funny. Are you saying that if Saddam Hussain had hired Neplease fighters before the 90s and had offered a better than UK Lahureism deal they wouldnt have taken their offer? lol!!!!

Let me give you the preference list for Lahures and this list is solely for financial benefit it is not influenced by economic, social, and political aspects.
1. UK
2. Singapore Police
3. Hong Kong
3. Middle East (Sultan of Brunai's guards)
4. India Army
5. Nepal Army

Are you saying that Lahures pick UK as a first preference because of the democracy and ethics that is practiced in UK or is it because of the pay and benefits that UK offers is the best? Hell..when lahure comes back to Syanja to get married...the UK lahure gets the best bhanji in the village. I dont think a lahure gives a crap about who he is fighting for as long as the money is right. We have a proof for this because they helped English suppress independence movement in India.

If Saddam's or hitler's offer was there for the right price...trust me our folks would fight for them.

Sidster, don't come up with the would have or should have possibilities. If I would have been the President of U.S, I would have deported you right away. See, I can add anything to that. It never happened and it's never going to happen with any other Saddam. Suppose the world turned upside down, and we find them on the wrong side like the Maoists now, we won't be happy with that, would we? Nor we would brag about them. Don't even start on the Indian independance to begin with, coz there was no such thing as India before the British united them.

"Hell..when lahure comes back to Syanja to get married...the UK lahure gets the best bhanji in the village." So this is all about girls hmmm. Some lahure took a girl you had a crush on haha. Don't feel sad about it, I'm sure it was her decision too.

"I dont think a lahure gives a crap about who he is fighting for as long as the money is right." You suffer from serious illness, you need help dude. Don't spend your time generalizing people on your own personal made assumptions but rather get straight facts. Have you personally went and asked all those people? How about this, if Saddam had given you more facilities than where you are right now, would you have kissed his a..s..s ? It's your personal choice, and if it turns out to be good and people appreciate it, then good for you. Good luck bro.

By the way I asked my father and a lot others currently in the British Army and they said "NO". They wouldn't have joined Saddam nor Hitler or any of those against HUMANITY, RIGHTS AND JUSTICE. Peace to all.

I agree with you 100% on what you said about the first cause. But i tend to believe that the while serving our first cause the second cause of "humanity" was answered. The second cause was never intended or foreseen by those needy hill people with the burden of first cause. We just happened to serve the second cause as well.

We are lucky that we are fighting for the winners at the moment even though we have been asked to do the questionable task for example in Iraq. Fighting for "humanity" is implying on us at this moment because we are at the "winners" side. We can all hope for the "human" things our people have done in Iraq and we were not bigger part of those over one million Iraqi  civilian's death.
