Arunima ( in Small town, somewhere in mid western US)

Arunima:[ really mad @ the phone] why is he not picking up the phone? Three rings and where the hell is he? @ this time.[ time 11:00pm].
Prassana: (picks up the phone and answers in a lethargic tone) yello!!!!
Arunima: [ this time really mad @ Prassana ] kina yetti time lagayeko phone uthauna. What r u doing? where were u for last 2 weeks? ek choti ta phone garnu hunchha ni. exam chha bhandai ma testo ta garnu hunna ni. I had exams too................. [ It has been 2 weeks since they last spoke to each other. She has been dying to hear his voice. Is she really????]
Prassana: (gasps for some air) I was sleeping. Tired. I just finished with my projects today. Have not slept for last 4 days. I got home around 5pm and was sleeping. [ tries to justify in a mere hope that she would calm down]
Arunima: mero pani exam thiyo. I have been calling u for last 2 weeks daily and u do not respond my calls. U have my schedule and u call when I am not home. [ it seems like her voice is cracking. she is gonna cry]
Prassana: [ cuts her in the middle ] hey hey... i was not trying to avoid you okey.. anu.. baby listen.. i am coming there this weekend @ ur place. will u calm down please.
Arunima: (real mad .... her face is red as if she is gonna explode) u are coming here? why? why on earth you would want to come here? shouldn't u ask me before u make any decisions? who do u think I am?
Prassana: ( he could not believe what he just heard. he tried pinching himself just to make sure that he was not dreaming) ( his head was processing data like a super computer. looks like his neurons are going on a overload) i thought we were gonna b together. and we talked about this last month that i would come over there after the semester and u r gonna transfer here.
Arunima: i do not know which world r ya in. but i am not in ur world.
Prassana: ( begins to feel like the earth is slipping under his feet. all the traction keeping him standing are fading) anu, whats wrong? what's happenning? why r u so different? in last 2 minutes u turned 180 degrees......
Arunima: 180 degrees.. and me no way.. its u prassana not me... it is u. everything is about u u and u. u never think of me. I am hanging up the phone now. if u want u know my schedule u can call me tomorrow.
(she hangs up the phone. prassana was just listening to the beep of the phone as it fades away. his sleep has vanished. how could he go back to sleep after listening to such a yalp.) (Another restless night)

Prassana: VISA ta payinchha hola. hami madhya kasaile VISA payena bhane kohi pani najane hunchha.
Arunima: hunchha. maile pani tehi bhanna lageko thiye. timle mero mukh bata sabda nikale ra laghdiyau. [ both of them had been student at Kathmandu University, Banepa. Prassana was an Engineering Major. While Arunima was in Business. Both spent their four years together... and of course its that friendship later flourished into "love" and promise to spend their life together. In another word, they have not been married but they acted like married couples. they were always together and were success story amongst friends. lot of couples splitted .. separated,..... remerged again to be separated but they never went through any real turmoil. no real ups or downs.. of course they had their share of fighting and nagging but nothing that rocked anything. looking at them they seemed like 2 puppies in love... cute cuddly couple meant for each other]
[ because of this inseperatabilty their relationship was no secret. their parents kind of gave in... their silent approval]
( it was prassana who was called in for his interview)
COUNSULAR: (stares @ prassana and then @ his I-20 and blurs) show me your transkript. (prassana hands the counsular his Bachelors Transcipt. after going through it he again blurts) u r qualified based on your education. But I still need to see your affadavit of support. How are you going to fund your education?
Prassana: I am being offered tuition remission. I need to pay for my room and board which is $8000/yr. For which my dad is going to pay. ( hands over bank statement to the counsular and ) here is my dad's bank statement verifying it.
COUNSULAR: congratulation. u can come after 3pm to pick up your passport with VISA.
( prassana was happy as a kid who has just been showered with lot of toys. He steps out of the embassy and waits for arunima to come out. he is already visualizing his way in between sky scrapers).
( after 5 minutes of wait. Arunima darts out of the embassy gate crying.. tears are flowing through her eyes. she was sobbing. prassana runs to her and grasps her in his arms and inquires. of course he could figure out that she was denied)
Prassana: anu, its okey sweety. its not the end of world. remember my promise. i am also not going to go. we will study here or go to india.
Arunima: (sobbing) no u should not give up this chance. I can try again next semester.
Prassana: no .. remember promise is promise and i will keep it. I will not go as well.

(prassana has not slept the whole night. he has spent the better part tossing and turning thinking what did he do wrong. what he should do? its 7am and he gathers his strength to call arunima. she picks up the phone is next ring. she must be anticipating his call. )
Prassana: anu! how are you?
Arunima: (curtly) could not have been better. and u?
Prassana: (he could sense the hostility in her tone) i am fine I guess. i am going to come there this weekend; what do you think?
Arunima: what do i think? (now she started blasting) you already made ur decision and now u r asking what do I think? u know what I think its all over between u and me. so whether you come or go I care less.
Prassana: (shocked and bewildered) anu, r u all right? how can u say that? i thought we were gonna get married!
Arunima: (mockingly) get married with you... common.. u must be joking. what do u think? i could get no one better. Listen I am done talking to you. never call again and if you come. then you can take ur pictures and stuffs that i have... (she hangs up the phone)
Prassana: (could not believe what he just heard. 1 after another. he thought that she was just mad @ him. but no.. this is real. she is really going away from her. this very sense of her not being in his life.. started scaring him.. deep.. .. all of a sudden his body started to feel cold. he was totally agasped ... not a whisper came out from him.. but tears just kept falling as if it was a mansoon rain)
(this very idea of losing someone so close ... even the faintest hint of her walking away is shattering all his dreams and desires and sand castles.. built in his utopian world)..............

Prassana's DAD: Prassana you can go now and Arunima can join you next semester.
Prassana: dad, hajur le k marji bha ko.. arunima le pheri VISA payena bhane k garne? what am i gonna do? 2-3 years..
Prassana's DAD: teso bhaye.. timi haru ko bihe gardinchhu. then u can take her probably as a dependent.
Arunima: i think we should not get married now. we are still young.
Prassana's MOM: arunima pani aahile bihe gare kura ma raji chhaina... tesaile tesh bare ma sochnu thik chhaina....
Prassana: ma chhai eklai jadai janna. aarko semester pheri sangai apply garaum la.
Arunima's DAD: teti bela pani arunima le VISA pauchhe bhanne gurantee ta chhaina ni. Aahile timi le VISA paayeko chhau u should go.
Arnunima: Prassana, u should go too. i will join u next semester if i get VISA. other wise I will wait for u here.
Prassana: But i made a promise... i will not go.
Arunima: It for our future and u should be realistic too.. yahan basera k hunchha.. jahile pani bandh.. nepal ko stithi testai ta ho ni.
once you are there then there are lot of ways. i will join u or wait for u.

prassana with his eyes glazed open still could not believe what he just heard over the phone. he was not mad @ arunima. Of course he got hurt being dumped over the phone from 7 years old relationship. but still he could not gather himself... he is certain in his mind that arunima is just angry. he would go to her place in alabama and soothe her and woo her over. he is confident and determined as ever that instead of the weekend he is gonna start his journey right @ this moment. while he walked towards his camry with his duffel. things started coming to his mind. he remembered the picture of another nepali guy she sent him like 2 months ago. she was so full of praise about him. he was so helpful and so on.......... no cannot be. his arunima is not like that. he started cursing himself for such a vain thought. he should not be even thinking about it.. how could it even come across his mind.. dyamnnnnn............................
it was raining hard... so he flickers on the wiper and the head light and then starts driving south on I-95 .. he should take I-275 then over the tapanzee .. take I-84.. ........... he hopes to soothe and woo ARUNIMA.. when he gets to alabama..........
